What We Do – Money
Microfinance lending
Scaling women’s access to resilient housing microfinance
In the Philippines, Build Change co-developed innovative loan products with microfinance partners. These products enable low-income women to access financing to strengthen their homes to better withstand windstorms and earthquakes. Our built-to-scale technical assistance platform drives quality construction and repayment performance.
We are now replicating this innovative lending model in Indonesia and Nepal.
Government subsidies
Unlocking public capital for disaster prevention in informal neighborhoods
In Colombia, Build Change successfully demonstrated that structural upgrades to reduce disaster risk within existing housing stock can be done affordably and at scale, and assisted the government to set up systems and change policies to reach hundreds of thousands of families. In 2021, the Government of Colombia signed a $136M loan agreement with the World Bank for home strengthening.
Growing and protecting wealth
Wealth in the hands of the people
Build Change has helped to protect $4.7B of housing assets around the world from loss in disasters. These assets are held in the hands of individuals and families.
Funding systems change
Highly leveraged philanthropy
Build Change is a systems change catalyst that uses philanthropy to break open the bottlenecks for resilient housing at scale. For example, in Colombia, we have spent less than $3M, which has helped to unlock over $500M in investment in resilient housing by the Government of Colombia, World Bank, and others.
