Juan Caballero has pioneered the use of seismic retrofitting for existing housing in international development. He is a noted disaster-resilient housing advocate and a trusted advisor to governments, multilateral institutions, and other partners on how to strengthen housing quality throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.  Juan first joined Build Change in 2012 as a member of the post-disaster team in Haiti. He has since advised and facilitated the scaling of a federal government resilient housing initiative in Colombia which by next year aims to protect 600,000 people. Concurrently, he led Build Change projects in Guatemala, Ecuador, Mexico, and Sint Maarten, among other locations. He has overseen the development of technical guidelines, manuals, and housing subsector studies as well as three post-earthquake reconnaissance teams. Juan earned his Master’s degree in Project Management from the Universidad para la Cooperación Internacional in Costa Rica. He is also an Architect licensed in both Honduras and Colombia, and is fluent in French and English in addition to Spanish. He has spoken widely on the topic of resilient housing throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
