Region and Risks
On December 26, 2004, an 9.2-magnitude earthquake on the Sunda trench caused the Indian Ocean tsunami. This was the third largest earthquake ever recorded by seismograph, lasting nearly 10 minutes.
The earthquake and resulting tsunami leveled over 60% of Banda Aceh’s structures and killed over 220,000 people in the Aceh province.
